If you have a toddler, you already know: everything goes in the mouth. Toys get chewed, gnawed, and dragged through the sandbox, and that is exactly why what they are made of matters.

Most conventional toys are plastic, and plastic does not stay plastic forever. It wears down with chewing and play, shedding tiny fragments, and many plastic toys also carry additives like phthalates that researchers have raised concerns about for kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics has straightforward guidance on choosing safer toys, and material choice is a big part of it.

The good news is that the alternative is not some joyless compromise. Wooden blocks, natural rubber bath toys, beeswax crayons, and silk play scarves are the toys kids actually reach for, and they hold up for years. We pulled together 47 of them, every one verified on Amazon, so you can build a toy box with a lot less plastic in it.

What About the Small Plastic Bits?

You will have noticed that a few picks on this list are described as mostly wood rather than one hundred percent plastic-free. That is deliberate, and here is why.

Some excellent toys have small secondary components that are not wood: the plastic parts on BRIO train engines, the silicone drumhead on the Hape Mighty Mini Band, a few metal and plastic bits on the Pound and Tap Bench. In every case the main body of the toy, the part your kid chews, handles, and plays with for hours, is solid wood or another natural material.

We included them because a toy that is ninety-five percent wood and gets played with for five years keeps far more plastic out of your home than holding out for perfection and buying the all-plastic version instead. Where a toy is not fully plastic-free, we said so right in its section, so you can decide for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wooden toys actually safer than plastic ones?

They have real advantages. Wood does not shed microplastics as it wears, and quality wooden toys skip the plasticizers and softening additives that show up in many plastic toys. Look for solid wood with non-toxic, water-based finishes, and check that the brand discloses its materials. The American Academy of Pediatrics also has general toy safety guidance worth a read before you buy anything.

Do natural rubber bath toys get moldy like regular ones?

That is exactly the problem the toys on this list solve. Ordinary bath toys have a hole in the bottom where water gets trapped, and that trapped water grows mold. The natural rubber bath toys here are sealed with no holes, so water cannot get inside in the first place. Just rinse them and let them air dry.

What ages does this list cover?

Pretty much the whole early childhood range. There are teethers and rattles for newborns, walkers and stackers for one-year-olds, play kitchens and train sets for preschoolers, and marble runs and balance bikes that work up to age five and beyond. Each section notes the manufacturer’s recommended age range.

Are secondhand plastic toys okay?

Honestly, yes, with a little common sense. Buying used keeps plastic out of landfills and money in your pocket, and an older toy has already off-gassed much of what it is going to off-gas. Just skip anything chewed up, cracked, or from before current safety standards, and give everything a good wash.

How do I clean wooden toys?

Keep it simple: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, then air dry. Do not soak wooden toys or put them in the dishwasher, since too much water can warp the wood and damage the finish. For bath toys, a quick rinse and air dry after each use is enough.
